Uniferon ® is an injectable iron supplement that ensures that the hemoglobin level of the piglets is well above the recommended 90g / l. The iron is available as iron dextran analogous to ferritin (the physiological form of iron) and reduces the risk of anemia due to iron deficiency.

Technical features:
Indication:
Treatment and prevention of anemia in piglets due to iron deficiency.
Contraindications:
Should not be used for suckling pigs in case of suspected vitamin E and / or selenium deficiency.
Do not use in case of hypersensitivity to the active substance.
Do not use in pigs older than 4 weeks as this may cause discolouration of the meat.

Side effects and risks
Iron dextran can very rarely cause fatal reactions when injected into piglets. Genetic factors or vitamin E / selenium deficiency are listed as causes. Deaths among piglets are occasionally reported. These deaths are attributed to increased susceptibility to infection as a result of temporarily blocking the reticuloendothelial system. Hypersensitivity reactions may occur. Injections with this veterinary medicinal product may cause transient discoloration and calcification at the injection site.
Interactions:
May cause reduction in the uptake of co-administered oral iron.
Special precautions
Special precautions for use in animals: Normal aseptic injection techniques should be used.
Special precautions to be taken by persons administering the medicinal product:
Care must be taken to avoid accidental self-injection. This is especially true for people with known hypersensitivity to iron dextran. In case of accidental self-injection seek medical advice immediately and show the package leaflet or the label to the physician. Wash hands after use.
Pregnancy and lactation:
Not applicable.
Overdose:
Increased propensity for systemic bacterial disease, pain, inflammatory reactions as well as abscess and / or persistent discoloration of muscle tissue at the injection site may occur. Iatrogenic poisoning with the following symptoms: pale mucosa, bleeding gastroenteritis, vomiting, tachycardia, hypotension, dyspnea, edema, lameness, shock, death, liver injury. Overdose can be treated with an iron chelating agent.
